Exceptional antique Eastern European folk shirt, most likely from the Transylvanian / Romanian-Hungarian sphere, with an incredible level of textile construction.

Made in a substantial natural white/cream woven fabric, with an unusually elaborate front built around multiple rows of extremely fine vertical pleating and pintucking running the full length of the button placket. The pleating is particularly impressive in person, creating almost architectural channels through the centre of the shirt.

The body is cut with shaped shoulder panels and a softly rounded collar, while the back is heavily gathered directly beneath the collar, allowing the generous body to fall from a concentrated point across the shoulders.

The sleeves are beautifully constructed with additional gathering at the upper arm and extremely intricate elastic-like hand pleating at the cuffs, finished with wide folded cuffs. Decorative buttons feature a radial/sun-like motif which adds another distinctly folk element.

A fantastic example of European traditional dress where the interest is entirely in the construction, handwork and manipulation of the cloth rather than surface decoration. The condition and shape are excellent for its age.
