Antique Victorian tailored frock-style jacket / short frock coat, with an exceptionally strong, almost armour-like construction and some genuinely insane period tailoring throughout. Cut in a dense black wool with an extremely substantial internal structure, the jacket holds its sculpted shape even off-body, with sharply built shoulders, a high standing collar, strongly suppressed waist and a pronounced, rounded extension through the lower body. The front features a dramatic six-button double-breasted arrangement with covered buttons, broad overlapping front panels and beautifully shaped curved pocket flaps, while the sleeves are heavily tailored with multiple-button cuffs. The construction becomes particularly impressive from the rear, where extensive curved panel seams articulate the shoulders, waist and back into an almost anatomical silhouette, with a central rear seam and carefully shaped lower panels creating the characteristic fitted Victorian line. The collar is particularly substantial, with decorative topstitching and layered construction adding further rigidity. More accurately described as a Victorian frock-style jacket or shortened frock coat rather than a full frock coat, given the length and silhouette, but it retains many of the defining principles of Victorian frock-coat tailoring. An extraordinary example of old-world bespoke construction, with an unusually thick, rigid structure and level of pattern-cutting that is increasingly difficult to find.
