Extremely dramatic Nude: Masahiko Maruyama mid-length parka, identified by the interior label as NDH-1135, constructed in 100% cotton.
The entire piece is built around an elaborate system of exposed, full-length zippers and expandable panels, allowing the silhouette to be radically altered. Both sleeves feature heavy-duty zippers running from the cuffs all the way up to the shoulders; when fully opened, the sleeve construction releases outward, dramatically widening the arms and exposing the underlying panel.
A further full-length zipper runs vertically through the centre back. Opening this releases an enormous rear panel, creating a huge extended back plate and transforming the proportions of the parka into something far more expansive and architectural. The back can therefore be worn either relatively contained or completely opened out.
The hood is particularly extreme — oversized, deeply voluminous and structured with internal wire, allowing it to be shaped and held in different positions. A Velcro fastening runs across the chin, allowing the hood to close tightly around the face and creating an almost cocoon-like enclosure.
The front is finished with a long central zip, angular patch pockets and articulated sleeve construction. At the hem, rear buttons allow the extended/fishtail section to be secured differently, giving the wearer the option of a more conventional straight hem rather than the pronounced fishtail silhouette.
The result is an unusually technical interpretation of the military parka: transformative, expandable and highly engineered, with the garment’s volume controlled almost entirely through its system of zippers, fastenings and released panels.
