Rick Owens AW07 Exploder Runway Sculptural Hooded Parka
Rick Owens Exploder Parka — FW07 / Fall-Winter 2007, runway look 8, from the women’s mainline collection. An exceptionally rare example of Owens’ early work, this is the Exploder parka in the signature cocoon silhouette, with an almost architectural approach to pattern cutting. The body is cut with a dramatically abbreviated, fitted front that expands into an enormous rounded lower back, creating a sharp contrast between the narrow upper body and exaggerated cocoon volume. The silhouette is achieved through complex shaped panels and radiating darts rather than simple oversized construction, with the front pockets built directly into the seams, disappearing into the pattern lines. The long, narrow sleeves are articulated with ribbed sections beneath the arms/through the underarm, allowing additional room and movement while retaining the close fit. The neckline rises into a substantial padded funnel high neck, while the enormous hood is heavily pattern-cut and features a central zip allowing it to open and unfold into an extended shape that falls dramatically over the shoulders, almost like a cape or sculptural collar. The back is particularly striking, with carefully engineered panels, pleats and volume creating the rounded cocoon form. Fully closed, the piece becomes extremely protective and almost cylindrical; opened at the hood, it transforms into a much more theatrical silhouette. The interior is fully lined with contrasting brown padded lining, giving the parka substantial warmth and structure while maintaining its severe black exterior; the shell is predominantly cotton with nylon content, with padded polyester insulation and cotton-blend lining. A defining piece from the Exploder era, when Owens was pushing outerwear towards highly sculptural, architectural forms, and its runway provenance makes it considerably rarer than later commercial Exploder pieces.
