Extremely rare Yuji Yamada A/W 1998 Layered Witch Parka, constructed in black wool with Yamada’s characteristic deconstructed, raw-edged approach. The standout feature is the five-layer sleeve construction, with each individual layer independently adjustable and capable of being folded, gathered or positioned to create different exaggerated shapes and stacked effects around the arms. The body is relatively minimal, contrasting with the highly sculptural sleeves, and features a full-length zip closure and large utilitarian patch pockets.
The parka’s defining proportions continue into its enormous, sculptural hood, built from overlapping panels with pronounced layered seam detailing. The same construction language is carried through the hem, where multiple irregular layers extend beyond one another with deliberately unfinished, fraying edges. A removable quilted lining in vivid yellow provides additional warmth and can be detached to alter the weight and silhouette of the piece. Made in Japan in 95% wool / 5% nylon, with nylon/polyester components to the removable quilted lining.
A particularly strong example of Yamada’s experimental late-1990s work, combining extreme volume, modular construction and intentionally unfinished detailing.
